Why do we gather in groups or behind the closed door of our bedrooms and start busting out moves to our favorite tunes? How does moving along to a beat feel so good? Especially when we’re with friends? Why did we start dancing in the first place?
Well, I’m glad you asked; it’s a great story.

We’ve all been hit by that urge. You know the one. Where a beat meets your body and your head starts to bob, then your shoulders start to wiggle, and next thing you know your hips are swaying, and your feet—well, I’ve actually never quite figured out what the feet are supposed to do—but you know what I mean. Have you ever stopped and asked yourself, why did we start moving in this way? What happened to make dancing so ingrained in what it means to be human?

Well, it all goes back to the very beginnings of us on Earth.

Everywhere you go, you’re going to find dancing.

It’s a part of who we are. Being in communities has been the key to our success as a species, and there’s nothing like coming together for a shared experience to bond us—especially when we’re all moving to the same beat.

This video from Aeon walks us through the steps of dance becoming a human necessity and the science behind what’s going on in our brains while we take part. On top of all of that, the animations from Andrew Khosravani and Rosanna Wan are brilliantly done and make the video a joy to watch!

You can see more fantastic work from Andrew Khosravani by visiting his Vimeo, website, and following along Instagram and Twitter! And for more work from the talented Rosanna Wan, please head over to their absolutely beautiful website, Vimeo library, or by following on Twitter and Instagram!

If the history of dance brings you anything, may it bring you this thought: When we’re able to find the common thread to what humans are doing around the world, we most often find that what connects us is way cooler than what separates us.

So what if the way they dance is different than how we would? Who cares if you think you’re terrible at it? Some of the happiest moments of my life have been feely dancing in a crowd with a bunch of my friends, or when I’m with a group of people who speak a language I don’t understand and a friendly face beckons me to the dance floor. The welcoming into a community is one of the most exhilarating experiences. In those moments, we’re all sharing something positive together.

Have you heard of Aeon?

For a quick introduction, here’s the description from their Vimeo channel:

“Aeon Video is a respite from the web’s disposable video content. Our original, exclusive and curated films bring questions about nature, technology and identity into luminous new clarity.”

Sounds like a pretty wonderful place, yeah?  They’re all about asking deeper questions and really thinking about the world and societies we’re in.  If you like Ever Widening Circles, you’re going to love Aeon. (Wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for the younger crowd due to some subject matter, but like us, their website also doesn’t have advertisements, a paid wall, or clickbait and their content is super interesting. “Just thought-provoking ideas from the world’s leading thinkers”.) You can watch more videos from them by clicking here. And make sure you check out their magazine to read some thoughtful essays by clicking here.

And you can stay up to date with all that they’re doing by following them on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram!
