“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” — Theodore Roosevelt

On this edition of Saturdays Around the World here at EWC, we’re heading back to Costa Rica and into the mountains of Santa Barbara de Heredia to hang out with some dogs.

Well, not really “some”; Hundreds.

Territorio de Zaguates, which loosely translates to “Land of the Strays”, is providing Costa Rica’s surplus of dogs who have found themselves without homes for one reason or another (an estimated million), with care, love, and plenty of space to play until they can find their forever homes.

This isn’t just a story about a bunch of cute pups, no, this is one about what the determination of a single human can do to make a change in thousands of other lives.

The Land of the Strays

In this beautiful and exceptionally touching film directed by Adrian Cicerone, we get a look into how Lya Battle and Alvaro Saumet brought Territorio de Zaguates into existence and how this mountain of dogs is given what they need to find the happiness they deserve.

How fantastic is that? Don’t you just want to go there?

Well, you can! One of the main missions of Territorio de Zaguates is to eventually find a home for the dogs that join them. 2 To make that possible and to help them become accustomed to meeting new people, they open up the mountain to visitors at specific times.

“The objective is to share with hundreds of dogs that lack, [or] never had, a family. Dogs that normally do not see other humans than those who take care of them. The idea is for them to receive lots of affection and socialize with the people and families that come to visit us.” 3

You can read more about how you can spend some time with the pups at the land of the strays on their website, and stay up to date with what they’re up to by giving them a like on Facebook!

If you’d like to help out these pups in Costa Rica…

They don’t euthanize any dog for any reason, and to provide the best care for each pup that joins them costs about $36 a month (veterinary care, food, and shelter). If you aren’t planning on going to Costa Rica or adopting a dog anytime soon but you still want to support them, they have a super easy donation process that you can find here.

Stay open to new possibilities!
