There are no great people in this world, only great challenges which ordinary people rise to meet. – William Frederick Halsey, Jr.

Today on Ever Widening Circles (EWC), we’re going into the Valley of a Thousand Hills, to the rural town of Durban, South Africa. Here we’ll find a bunch of kids playing together, no longer on the dangerous streets, but instead, on a half-pipe.

Indigo Skate Camp was created in 2001 by professional skateboarder Dallas Oberholzer as a way to get kids in the Zulu Village more involved in their community. Through attending, the participants learn various life lessons, all held together by a love of skateboarding. Let’s discover how this camp may alter their futures!

Can we talk about how amazing those kids are?

More importantly, can talk about how this program is going to affect their outlook on life?

Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional. – Roger Crawford

Think about it, if you grow up in a rural place where it’s hard to get out and see other areas, what will your opinion on the world be when your own is only a couple hundred miles in size?

So many doors will be opened through Indigo Skate Camp! The participants travel and meet people from all over that share the same love for skateboarding, aiding them in developing a richer understanding of the world and giving them hope that one day they’ll go out there and make their own marks!

Isn’t this how we make the world better?

If you aren’t in over your head, how do you know how tall you are? – T.S. Eliot

Through the camp, these children are shown that there’s more out there than their small village in rural South Africa. They’re shown how to respect one another, how to pick each other up, and how to fight for what they love. They’re able to be a part of a new wonderful community, full of people they may have never known without Indigo Skate Camp. What an amazing opportunity!

A love for this sport hasn’t just been springing up in South Africa, but all over the world; helping children create friendships and giving them space to play. If you have the time, check out our article on this similarly amazing initiative, Skateboarding in Afghanistan!

Keep yourself open to new possibilities and happiness will stay nearby!
