Science is all about carefully calculated discovery, right? Well, not all the time. Sometimes there are amazing accidents!

It turns out, scientific mishaps are actually responsible for some of our most incredible finds!

As you may know, Penicillin, the antibiotic that arguably changed the course of history, was one of these accidental discoveries. But there are many more instances of brilliant scientific accidents out there to be celebrated!

Today, we are going to introduce you to a few of these accidents that turned into remarkable discoveries.

Here’s the NPR YouTube Channel Skunk Bear with the stories.

We’ve paired this video with thought-provoking discussion questions perfect for the classroom in this touchstone on our education platform, EWCed!

Redefining “Failure”

Well, there you have it! Inspired accidents that push us all forward!

I think these stories are remarkable because they speak to the importance of seeing possibility in failure.

We talk a lot about possibility here on Ever Widening Circles (EWC), and so much of the time those that see possibility are those that remain curious in the face of failure of some kind. Whether that’s our failure to properly protect our oceans, or the failure of our own bodies to perform as it once did, or the seeming failure of fate to give us the “best” opportunity. There is always possibility in re-framing the things that go wrong.

What if failure wasn’t synonymous with things going wrong, but instead with places to find new answers? Would we approach the world in a more inspired way?
