Do we need to take ourselves so seriously?

Is there a simple joy to be found in celebrating the absurd, and the things that bring a smile to our faces?

Today I want to tackle what I believe is the easiest reminder out there that it’s still an amazing world: we can find joy and connection through laughter.

Not all of us will become cutting edge scientists, renowned artists, or phenomenal inventors. But we do all have the power to put a smile on somebody’s face, or even better, make them laugh.

I want to share with you something that certainly made me smile when I encountered it.

Not too long ago I was content searching and found this video about Penny Farthing racing. I’m not sure why the thought of people seriously racing on such strange and whimsical contraptions had me so overjoyed, but I decided to watch it. It turns out, I’m not the only one that finds these so wonderfully fun! I’ll try not to spoil it too much, but needless to say, whenever I see serious competition combined with the absurd and the lighthearted I am always warmed to my core!

Watching this race in person is certainly going on my bucket list! If you want another crazy race to take a look at, check this one out!

Joy is one of those abundant but rarely talked about forces out there. It is contagious and feels just as wonderful to spread as it does to feel.

Here’s a parting activity to try out. Tomorrow, take notice of the moments that bring you joy. Maybe it’s the smell of coffee in the morning, seeing an old friend, taking the time to enjoy a moment of silence, or maybe somebody brought you a little joy with their actions or words. Whatever moments you felt, take the next day to spread moments of joy in other people’s lives. As an absurdist, I enjoy a good dance session at a stoplight and very often find that it brings a laugh or certainly a smile to the driver next to me. This might not be your style, though, so find what works for you!

So, go out into the world and be joyful! You’ll be another reason why it’s still an amazing world!

Stay beautiful & keep laughing!
