The year 12017–yes, 12017–is approaching and maybe it’s time that we started thinking just a little differently about our own human history!

So, what is this 12017 business, isn’t 2017 coming up? Well, it is, but the video that we are sharing today gives us some pretty compelling reasons to start thinking a little differently about the way we record our history.

Think about it, the calendar we use only represents a tiny part of human history. We are neglecting at least 10,000 years of our history! And in addition, it really only works when talking in terms of western history. Many great civilizations and leaps in human history were made across the globe prior to year 1 of the Common Era.

So, why do we use a calendar that, at least in years, omits so much?

The great YouTube channel, Kurzgesagat has made an incredibly thought-provoking video that we are sharing with you today about the Holocene calendar. A calendar that takes a different approach to recording human history.

Take a look and see how your perspective shifts over the next few minutes in a great video brought to us by a channel we love, Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell:

So, what do you think?

What if we did think about this upcoming year as the year 12,017? Would we expect more from ourselves? Would we expect to be further along, kinder to one another, more aware? Or, if we put this span of time in terms of geologic history are we pretty far along, just at the beginning, and doing pretty well for a toddler species?

However you choose to look at the span of human progress, the word to focus on is, really, progress. We have a long way to go, we are, as a species, children running with scissors, we can learn to grow, mature, and be kinder to each other and to the planet.

Flipping the script of human history proves it’s still an amazing world because it’s amazing to look back at the things we have achieved, and look forward to a future we can choose to make better!

Whatever way you go about celebrating the new year, remember, we get to write history from here on out. Our compassion, our kindness, our desire to make the world an amazing place all matters.

Stay beautiful & keep laughing!
