Have you ever wondered what having superpowers would be like? Would you be able to fly, or have super strength or be invisible?

But if we did have superpowers, would they be as glorious as we think?

Movies can make out-of-this-world abilities look enjoyable and simple. TED-Ed has other ideas. In a fun series, they are using science and practical thinking to show you just how uncomfortable superpowers might actually be.

Let’s start with invisibility, as brought to us by TED-Ed:

Okay, so invisibility may have a few hurdles.

What about the ability to grow and shrink ourselves? What kind of science would have to go into that? Here’s more TED-Ed:

So, what do you think about the Incredible Hulk now? There’s a lot of science to think about there!

Alright, here’s a favorite superpower, let’s take a look at flight!

Do you know about TED? TED.com is one of the most interesting corners of the web and EWC features the best of their talks a couple times each month. If I do say so myself, EWC and TED are the only places I have found where smart people, curious and hopeful, can always come away transformed. Check out our list of Must-See TED Talks here, and check out TED themselves here.

But back to these videos, wow! They really make me think! Would you still want to be able to fly if it were like how TED-Ed describes it?

Everyday Superhumans…

I’ve never thought this much about the science behind superpowers before! The shows and movies make them look so simple!

Now, I’m not using these videos to crush your superhero dreams, quite the opposite! TED-Ed proved some really great points and realistically, that’s what the most popular powers would be like.

But since no human being has ever been born with or acquired any sort of stupendous gifts, how can we know for sure that that’s how they’ll be?

Will we ever be able to turn invisible by a blink of an eye like Susan Storm, or have super speed like the Flash? Maybe one day! All TED-Ed is saying is that they might not be as fabulous and extravagant as film companies portray them to be.

Even though superpowers aren’t a real thing yet, we all have something close to a superpower inside of us. There’s super moms, super dads, super crime fighters; like cops and firefighters, and even super-scientists like the TED-Ed team! So don’t let our human disadvantages make your day full of doom and gloom, because you are super in your very own way!

Which one of the TED-Ed superpowers would you pick if you had to? I think I’d pick flight!

Be understanding, be passionate, be joyous. But most of all, be yourself.
