If you are a regular visitor here at EWC, you may know that our mission is to remind us all that the world is still an amazing place, despite what the negative 24-hour news cycle tells us.

We know we are up against the CNNs, Fox News, and the like, but we have found a major crack in the matrix that keeps us bound in fear. The world actually is not going to hell in a handbasket!  Many things are actually getting a lot better!

After writing and publishing 873 carefully fact-checked articles, on every subject under the sun, we can tell you there is an extraordinary amount of good that goes unreported and uncelebrated. You can scroll down our homepage to start a journey with us that will turn your worldview around.

The greatness of human potential and the possibility all around us is actually astounding.

To back that up, today we refer you to a great TED talk by Hans Rosling in which he shares a wonderful update on the state of the world. (The speaker has a very dry sense of humor, so the talk starts out slow. But hang in there and you’ll start to see the magic!)

Sidenote: Our frequent readers know how much we love TED. With watching that video of theirs, how can you not? TED.com is one of the most interesting corners of the web. EWC features the best of their talks a couple of times each month. EWC and TED are the only places I have found where smart people, curious and hopeful, always come away transformed. Check out our list of favorites from TED here!

So there’s the actual science that explains where we are at in the trajectory of civilization! Looks a bit different than the version we see in the media, doesn’t it?

We received an email recently from an EWC visitor which stood out to us. His chosen work and family life brings him very close to human suffering. He is a leader of many, an innate “giver” and a wise steward of youthful minds that need a positive way forward.

In the email he said,

“I felt inspired this morning to write to you guys because even from a distance you have an amazing impact on my life and I am sure countless others. It has been an overwhelming summer with supporting kids and families who are bombarded with not only their own complex challenges but also with the daily images and stories of violence that have become the norm.  I have felt unsure at times of how to manage all of this as if I am paddling against a tide much greater than I can handle.  And then it occurred to me again that maybe the change begins with me, my perspective.

I have been connecting to the violence, the election drama, the updates about how crappy and out of control everything is.  And then this morning I decided to just Stop. What would happen if I decided to see things from a different angle? Not to be in denial about the challenges that face us as a people but to find balance. And this morning I connected to ever widening circles and the impact this had literally brought me to tears.

I am so grateful for you guys and for the stories you choose to share.  By me choosing to do this instead of watching the morning news, I have changed the entire direction of my staff retreat.  I had planned to have the “difficult conversations” about expectations and bottom lines.  And now I am more interested in focusing on connection, care and consideration for one another and the value of understanding one another in effective leadership.

The stories you share shifted my paradigm and it was SO needed at this time for me.

The ripples of this change in me will impact an entire community that I serve.
A thousand thank you’s!”

Stay open, curious and hopeful!
