There’s a reason why the phrase “the Birds and the Bees” is associated with bringing new life into the world. It turns out that one of their key activities is responsible for 90% of the living things on our planet: pollination.

And who knew it was such a breathtakingly beautiful process?

Today’s EWC article is not about the science of pollination as much as it is the wonder of this rarely noticed and underappreciated marvel.

We are sharing two videos by one of the most renown videographers in the world, Louie Schwartzberg.

You’ve seen his work before here at Ever Widening Circles in the very first article we published, Gratitude and Wonder with Louie Schwartzberg, and another achingly beautiful and fascinating video called Hidden Mysteries of Our World. We absolutley love his work.

As spring flowers emerge in the northern hemisphere and the sounds of bees and birdsong sets the soundstage of a morning walk, our video shares today may put a spring in your step as you consider the apple in your lunchbox and the smell of a rose a little differently. Before yawning and moving on, take a little journey with us.

Watch this first, amazing video that highlights the unseen magic and beauty of pollination.

Who knew the pollinators themselves could be so elegantly beautiful?

I came across this incredible video from Louie and an accompanying TEDtalk the other day, and I just had to share the breathtaking images with you.

Who knew we could marvel at the beauty of pollination?

As mentioned, the excerpt above comes from a longer TED Talk by Louie Schwartzberg, and as a bonus, here’s the full presentation explaining how and why the film was made:

And past the beauty of these videos, there is more wonder… Here’s a startling fact that stopped me in my tracks:

Science tells us that ALL life on this planet depends on plants. That said, if plants are the underpinning of our existence, then a good question might be, is the one thing that plants ultimately depend on; something we should consider precious?

You guessed it: pollination!

Thanks to Jon D. from Vancouver for sending us the link for today’s article. You too can send us story ideas, and even write for EWC periodically if you’re into that sort of thing!

And here’s a fun bonus: if you want to learn a little more about the process of pollination from a bee’s perspective, check out our article called Why should we care about the Waggle Dance, and learn how we can actually understand what bees are “saying” to each other!
