In 1994, Frenchman Jean-Yves Blondeau had a crazy dream, as many of us do from time to time, but he actually executed it!

He dreamt of rolling down the French mountainsides at ludicrous speeds on his stomach, navigating the treacherous terrain seemingly out of control, while completely maintaining it, in a suit covered with small wheels. (And if you already know about that project, wait untill you see what he’s been up to this winter on the slopes! That’s in our bonus video!)

Blondeau has been as near to flight as a person can be without leaving the ground.

Okay… maybe Blondeau’s dreams are a little different than most. But alas, 20 years later, Blondeau became a hero and a measure of possibility for extreme sports enthusiasts, and brave folk the world over: Jean-Yves Blondeau became Rollerman.

Believe it or not, Blondeau is a designer by trade, developing the first incarnation of his “Buggy Suit,” currently in its sixth set of modifications, as his graduation project at the Olivier de Serres design school in Paris. 2

Rollerman has since gone on to some worldwide acclaim, working with esteemed video producer Danny Strasser (check out his youtube channel) and making regular appearances (much to many children’s delight) as Rollerman.

Check out more Rollerman videos on Blondeau’s YouTube channel Buggy Rollin’, and take a look at one of his latest videos below. In this next one, fast forward to 1 minute into the video to get the best video of Rollerman’s work.

Update…

Rollerman himself, Mr. Jean-Yves Blondeau contacted Ever Widening Circles to correct a few issues in our initial publication of this article, and in it was attached his 20th anniversary as Rollerman video. He’s a nice fellow!

Want to see what Blondeau is up to now? Here’s his latest mind-blowing innovation, designed for the slopes!

Thanks for stopping by EWC.

Rollerman’s curious innovations are something fun today. There probably won’t be a cure for cancer or a major world problem solved by these concepts in extreme sports, but who knows! Many of humanities greatest leaps forward start with people who connect concepts that no one ever thought to combine.

Maybe today’s article will be the spark that lights a passion for some brilliant young mind who will help us innovate into a better way of transportation or an innovation we can not imagine.
