“Begin to feel your existence as fundamental.”-Alan Watts

An Ever Widening Circles fan who drops by every day knows we love asking new questions. She came across this Alan Watts piece and had to watch it 4 times before she could take in most of the points.

There’s just so many odd observations here to ponder, especially given the sense of chaos that has evolved in the past year.  See what strikes you here, no matter your culture or politics…

I’m still stuck on this concept that if dark implies light, death implies life, self implies other, burdens imply freedom, the present implies eternity, fear implies peace of mind.

You can play with that concept for a long time and then gradually realize that many things cannot exist without their polar opposite to define them. Have many of us felt we were in the world on probation? The “winners” now, once felt as the “losers” and now the “losers” are aching for all the other losers.

With that, it seems obvious that it’s all about our choices, one by one, and the polar opposite choices we could have made.

Many people are walking around feeling like strangers in a strange land lately.

But what if every one of us is exactly the self we were supposed to be, and our way forward, as the winners or the losers is to stop pretending we are one or the other? What if we could step out of this never ending cycle of pretenses?

This world is growing so connected and technology so far reaching that if there are people who feel like “losers” among us, they can easily make actual losers out of all of us.

The dream of life…

It’s all about what we nurture by honoring it with our attention.

Cumulatively, our collective attention matters.

Our recent elections in the U.S. demonstrate that concept perfectly. Focus on what divides us, amplify it and you get more of the same. No culture advances with that as a foundation.

That said, the next step in this thought process might be to come to the conclusion that we have not arrived here as a fluke. We each may have a meaningful path, waiting for us if we can sort through the murk of chaos.

No work or love will flourish out of guilt, fear, or hollowness of heart, just as no valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living gently and positively now.

It’s all about finding a way forward with dignity now!

Stay open, curious and optimistic!
